Why it carries extra weight in Scotland

Three things make a carer's account unusually valuable for ADP. Decisions are made on the papers, so the written bundle is the assessment. Social Security Scotland's own guidance names people who know you well - family, carers, support workers - as a legitimate source of supporting information, treated alongside professional documents. And the reliability criteria (safely, to an acceptable standard, repeatedly, within a reasonable time period) describe exactly what a carer observes at close range. Nobody needs formal status to write one - and whether they receive Carer Support Payment makes no difference. If anything, the passporting runs the other way: your daily living award can later help them qualify.

Who can write a carer's statement for ADP?+

Anyone who genuinely helps or sees you regularly: a partner, parent, adult child, friend, neighbour or paid support worker. They need no formal status, do not have to live with you, and do not need to receive Carer Support Payment. More than one person can each write their own statement.

Does Social Security Scotland accept statements from family?+

Yes - explicitly. Social Security Scotland's guidance treats a description of how you are affected from someone who knows you well as supporting information in its own right, alongside documents from professionals. And because most ADP determinations are made on the papers, a clear first-hand account carries real weight.

Where do I send a carer's statement for ADP?+

Send it with your application, or post or upload it afterwards with your name on it. At an award review it goes with the review form, and at a re-determination or appeal it goes to Social Security Scotland or the First-tier Tribunal for Scotland. Send a copy rather than the only original.
